How to Build a Gravel Driveway with a Rented Track Loader

Step-by-step: plan, dig, base and grade a gravel driveway in Wisconsin using a rented compact track loader.

Plan the route

Stake the centerline, mark the width (10–12 feet is typical for a single lane) and note low spots where water collects. Water is the enemy of a gravel driveway, so plan a slight crown and a place for runoff to go.

Before you dig

Take care of these first:

  • Call Diggers Hotline (811) at least three business days ahead.
  • Check with your town or county about culvert or driveway access permits if you're connecting to a public road.
  • Order your base and top gravel so it's on site when the machine arrives.

Strip and shape

Use the bucket to strip sod and topsoil down to firm subsoil. Shape the bed with a slight crown so water sheds to the sides. A track loader handles this well even on soft ground.

Lay the base, then the top

Spread a thick layer of coarse base stone, pack it by driving over it in passes, then add a finer top layer. Back-drag with the bucket to smooth and keep the crown.

How long to rent

A short residential driveway is often a one- to three-day job once gravel is on site. Longer runs or heavy clearing go faster with a weekly rental, which usually costs less per day.
